There was a hush in the Port St. Lucie clubhouse when the news began to spread. Johan Santana had another shoulder tear. Surgery was likely.
“Esto es terrible,” Ruben Tejada said.
“That’s Johan’s line,” Daniel Murphy said.
“I know, mi amigo,” Ruben said. “But today, it’s all of ours. It is a terrible day.”
Moments later, Johan walked into the room. The hush grew to complete silence.
“I’m sorry, Johan,” David Wright said, extending his hand to Johan.
“So am I,” Johan said, looking very sad. “I was looking forward to this year.”
Daniel Murphy couldn’t take the tension anymore. He reached into his locker and grabbed his gym bag. He ran out of the room and when he was out of sight, he reached inside and took out the orange and blue costume of the Superhero. “My teammate needs me,” he said to himself.
He quickly changed and came back into the clubhouse. “Have no fear, Johan! The Superhero is here!”
Johan looked up and said nothing. Not even the sight of the Superhero could cheer him up.
“Goodbye, everybody,” Johan said quietly. “I couldn’t have asked for a better team. I wish you a great season.”
With that, the Cy Young award winner left the room.
