Daniel Murphy: Superhero – Episode 19

Daniel Murphy was watching the World Baseball Classic when all of a sudden, he saw a benches clearing brawl erupt between Canada and Mexico.

“Oh, no!” Daniel exclaimed.  “That’s terrible!”

Daniel had teammates from all over the world, and he most certainly did not want tensions to erupt in the clubhouse over national rooting interests.  He whipped out his secret red cell phone and quickly dialed Ruben Tejada.  “It’s time for the Double Play Combination,” he told Ruben.  “Our teammates need us!”

Daniel and Ruben quickly started calling the entire team, right down to the clubhouse attendants for an emergency and urgent meeting.  Within an hour, the entire team was assembled.

“What’s the reason for the meeting?” Ike Davis wanted to know.  “I was getting my groove on!”

“Yeah,” Justin Turner wanted to know.  “I was getting my groove on, too!”

“Now everyone, let’s just calm down and relax,” Daniel said.  “Who else was getting their groove on when we called?”

Nearly everyone in the clubhouse raised their hand.  Even Terry Collins.  The team did not look happy.

“Uh oh,” Daniel said to Ruben.  “This isn’t looking too good.”

“No, it’s not, mi amigo,” Ruben said.

“Everyone, wait right here!” Daniel said.  He and Ruben ran off.  Within moments, the pair was changed into their nearly matching blue and orange superhero costumes – Daniel’s with the cape with the large number 28 trailing behind, Ruben’s with the Panama flag on the chest and the large number 11 on the cape.  They sprinted back into the room to address the team.

“It’s the Superhero and El Once!” Jon Niese exclaimed.

“Yes, it is us!” Daniel Murphy said.  “Separate, we are super.  Together, we are the Double Play Combination!”

“Your excellent teammates Daniel Murphy and Ruben Tejada called you here tonight because they care about you,” Ruben said.  “Those two fine young men were concerned by what they saw tonight in the World Baseball Classic.”

“That’s right,” Daniel said.  “They want everyone to get along and be friends.  So how about it?”

Ike Davis raised his hand.

“Yes?” Daniel asked.

“Couldn’t this have waited until tomorrow?  I was getting my groove on!”

“No!” Daniel and Ruben said in unison.  “This can’t wait until tomorrow!  Everyone, follow our lead!”

The Superhero and El Once each pulled a pitch pipe out of their capes.  “Together now!”

Why can’t we be friends?

Why can’t we be friends?

Why can’t we be friends?

Why can’t we be friends?

Before long, the entire team was in a rousing chorus of “Why Can’t We Be Friends”.  After ten minutes of this repetitive chorus, the Superhero and El Once once again addressed the entire team.

“Don’t we all feel better?” Daniel asked.  “Are we all friends?”

“Sure,” Justin Turner said. “Can I go back to getting my groove on?”

“Of course you can,” Ruben said.  “Our job here is done.  Just glad to be able to help.”

The Superhero and El Once ran out of the room.  Moments later, Daniel and Ruben returned.

“Now didn’t that help?” Daniel asked.  “I just saw the Double Play Combination pass me as I was coming back in here.  No fighting okay?”

“Sure,” John Buck said.  “Can we all go, now?”

As the team was leaving, Daniel and Ruben gave each other a high five.  “Good job, Ruben,” Daniel said.  “We can sleep well tonight knowing we made the clubhouse a better place.”
